DUNCAN DUNLOP MUST EXPLAIN DECISION TO DENY DEMOCRACY

SNP MSP for Midlothian North, Colin Beattie, has called out the Liberal Democrats for siding with Reform UK and the Tory party to deny Scotland’s right to decide.

In a vote in the Scottish Parliament, the Lib Dems voted against a motion stating that “the Parliament agrees that Scotland is a nation that has a right to decide its own future..." – while the SNP, Labour Party and Greens all backed the motion.

The Lib Dems, who formed a disastrous coalition UK Government with the conservative party, were the only progressive party to deny that Scots have the right to decide their own future, despite the vast majority of Scots wanting their chance to decide.

New prime minister Andy Burnham has resoundingly backed the concept that Scotland will have a referendum when the majority of Scots want one – the first time since 2014 a British Prime Minister has acknowledged this right.

Now Colin Beattie MSP has called on Duncan Dunlop to explain why their party has got back into bed with the Tories and sides with Reform UK against the people of Scotland.

Commenting, SNP MSP Colin Beattie, said:

“The Scottish Parliament has resoundingly backed the fact that Scotland is a nation and that Scots have the right to decide our own future – so it was extremely disappointing to see the Lib Dems oppose this.

“Instead of standing on the side of Scotland – the Lib Dems have chosen to get back into bed with the Tories, taking sides alongside Nigel Farage and Reform UK.

“Duncan Dunlop must explain why they don’t think Scotland is a nation, or why they believe we shouldn’t have the right to decide our own future.

“The prize for an independent Scotland is the economic benefits that would come from re-joining the EU – the Lib Dems must alter their position and back Scotland's right to decide.”
