The Mining Remediation Authority are carrying out works at Dalkeith building a mine water treatment works to treat waste water from former mine workings. Once complete the works will remove metals and other contaminants from the Esk
During these works a problem was discovered with the Old Fordell tunnel which carries water from mine workings to the Esk. This has resulted in a temporary pipeline being installed to deal with the backed up water. The Mining Remediation Authority are working with Midlothian Council to install a permanent solution.
